VICTOR RESOURCES / GLOSSARY

Speak Victor.

The terms you will meet in the console and the docs, in plain language. Where there is a close vSphere equivalent, it is listed to help you map what you already know.

Admission controlAvailability · vSphere: vSphere HA admission control
Reserving cluster capacity so HA can restart VMs after a host failure: by host failures to tolerate, a percentage, or dedicated failover hosts.
Air-gap bundleDelivery
A signed, expiring archive with everything needed to install and upgrade Victor offline: images, Helm chart, binaries, Terraform provider mirror, SBOMs and docs.
Audit chainSecurity
Victor’s event log, with every event SHA-256-chained and signed Ed25519 checkpoints every minute, so tampering can be detected.
Change feedAutomation
A typed stream of VM lifecycle changes for integrators. Victor Cloud uses it for usage metering.
Change freezeOperations
A period in which disruptive actions on the objects it covers are refused, whatever the maintenance windows say, unless overridden with a reason.
Classic viewConsole · vSphere: vSphere Client
The console presentation modeled on the vSphere Client: top menu, inventory tree with four views, and Recent tasks docked at the bottom.
DatastoreStorage · vSphere: Datastore
Where VM disks live: an Incus storage pool or a Kubernetes storage class.
DRSAvailability · vSphere: vSphere DRS
Distributed Resource Scheduler: Victor compares hosts by their VMs’ CPU and memory demand and live-migrates VMs to balance them within rules and headroom.
EngineArchitecture
The runtime that actually runs a VM: Incus for classic VMs or KubeVirt for Kubernetes VMs.
Evidence packageSecurity
A signed ZIP for assessors with a report, every check as JSON, an access review, an audit extract with its chain, inventories, configuration and the SBOM.
Fake engineArchitecture
A built-in simulated engine that seeds a demo datacenter so the console runs without hardware. The public lab and screenshots use simulated estates.
FederationSites · vSphere: Enhanced Linked Mode
Enterprise feature that joins independent Victor sites into one administrative view, with actions routed to the owning site and no central server.
FencingAvailability
Making a failed host unable to run or write, by BMC power-off, storage fencing or watchdog, before HA restarts its VMs elsewhere.
Guest ToolsVMs · vSphere: VMware Tools
Victor’s signed, offline ISO of VirtIO drivers and guest agents.
HypervisorArchitecture · vSphere: ESXi
The component that provides virtual machines with execution and isolation on a host. Victor uses KVM, a Type 1 hypervisor integrated into the Linux kernel, and adds infrastructure and workload management around it.
Identity preservationMigration
Keeping a migrated VM’s BIOS UUID, instance UUID, Generation ID (on Incus) and MAC addresses.
IncusArchitecture
A runtime component Victor uses for KVM VM and host operations. KVM is the hypervisor; Incus handles the underlying VM, storage and network lifecycle through its API.
Instant recoveryBackup · vSphere: Instant VM recovery
Enterprise, Incus only: booting a backup as a new VM at once while its disks copy in the background.
IP poolNetworking
A Victor-managed IPv4 range on a network, from which addresses are allocated when VMs are created.
KubeVirtArchitecture
The upstream project that runs VMs as Kubernetes resources. Victor manages it beside Incus.
Maintenance windowOperations
A recurring or one-off period in which disruptive actions may run on a cluster, folder or VM group.
MCP toolsetAutomation
A named group of Model Context Protocol tools an AI assistant can use. Victor’s MCP server is off by default.
Migration planMigration
A mapping of vCenter VMs, networks, datastores, folders and resource pools to Victor targets, exportable as YAML.
MorefInventory · vSphere: Managed object reference
A stable inventory ID such as vm-42 or host-7, never reused. A migrated VM gets a new Victor moref; its migration plan records the source moref it came from.
Network ACLNetworking
A set of firewall rules on an Incus bridge or OVN network; applied to one VM it becomes that VM’s firewall.
Overcommit ratioCapacity
How many vCPUs per hardware thread, or how much guest memory per GiB of host memory, a cluster may allocate.
Restore pointBackup
One backup of a VM: its definition and every disk, taken at one instant.
Runtime moveArchitecture
Moving a stopped VM between the classic and Kubernetes runtimes while keeping its ID. Opt-in on the server.
Security & Compliance CenterSecurity
The administration page that runs Victor’s security checks, maps them to NIST SP 800-53 and produces evidence packages.
SiteSites
One Victor control plane with its own database and the clusters it manages.
TaskOperations
A durable record of a change with steps and progress. Tasks survive a control-plane failover.
Task leaderArchitecture
The victord replica holding the database lock that runs tasks, schedules, DRS and HA.
Test bootMigration
Enterprise: booting a copy of a source VM in an isolated network to check it before cutover.
Type 1 hypervisorArchitecture
A bare-metal hypervisor that uses the host hardware to execute and isolate virtual machines. KVM provides this foundation for Victor; the management console can run on a host, in an appliance or on Kubernetes.
victorctlAutomation · vSphere: govc
Victor’s command-line client.
victordArchitecture · vSphere: vCenter Server
Victor’s control-plane server; victord-ee is the Enterprise build.
Victor applianceDelivery · vSphere: vCenter Server Appliance
Victor packaged as one Incus VM that manages the cluster it runs on.
Victor HostDelivery · vSphere: ESXi
Victor’s image-mode AlmaLinux 9 host OS with Incus, installable offline from an ISO.
Victor viewConsole
The roomier console presentation with a slim section rail and summary cards, shared with Victor Cloud.
vSphere bridgeMigration
Victor answering selected vSphere SOAP and REST calls so existing tools keep working during a migration.
WaveMigration
Enterprise: a batch of VMs in a migration plan started together.
